It's tempting to buy that three-pack of swim goggles at the warehouse store
but what you save in cost will catch up to you later when you realize those
goggles just don't fit the way they should. Whether you are looking for
goggles for yourself or your children, the right style and fit can affect performance.
The first thing to consider is where you are swimming: indoors or outdoors? Will it be
daytime or evening? You may need to purchase more than one set of goggles. Make note: some people find the clear
goggles are too bright even indoors and prefer slightly tinted goggles that
work both indoors and out.
Second, don't try to size your child by an age group and don't grab the
first adult size pair for yourself. Definitely try youth size goggles first for
kids, but the best way to find the right size is to do the suction test that
you will see in the video below.
For the best fit, head to a professional swim store where they have a large
selection of goggles to try, and experts who can see how the straps will fit.
If you swim regularly, expect to replace your goggles every 3-4 months
because the chlorine can break down the material. When this happens people tend
to pull the straps tighter but really this won't help with the suction. Once it
is gone, it's gone. The good news is you can find a replacement pair in
the goggle and cap vending machines located in the lobby area of all four
Montgomery County indoor pools!
